Netgear EX3700 setup guide’s quick answer: plug it in near your router and wait for the Power LED to turn solid. Connect to the NETGEAR_EXT WiFi network, then go to 192.168.1.250 (or mywifiext.net) in a browser — or use the Nighthawk app — to finish linking it to your home network.
The EX3700 is one of Netgear’s most common small plug-in extenders, and in my 8 years of hands-on experience with these devices, it’s also one of the most mis-documented — the setup IP address alone is wrong on more pages than it’s right on. This guide covers all four real setup methods for this specific model (WiFi/browser, WPS, the Nighthawk app, and wired access point mode), the correct network details, what every light actually means, and the real reasons setup fails — not generic “restart it” advice.
EX3700 Quick Specs
- WiFi class: AC750 — dual-band (2.4GHz + 5GHz)
- 1 Ethernet port (used for the wired AP mode setup below)
- External antennas for extended range
- Compatible with any router brand, not just Netgear
Which Setup Method Should You Use?
The EX3700 can be set up four different ways. Pick based on what you have on hand, not just whichever a video happens to show first:
- WiFi/browser setup — works on any router, no buttons to press in sync. Best default choice, and the one to use if you want to set it up without a WPS button.
- WPS — fastest if your router has a WPS button, but it has to go right the first time or it quietly fails (see the troubleshooting section).
- Nighthawk app — easiest if you’re comfortable on your phone, and it walks you through placement too.
- Access point (AP) mode — wired setup over Ethernet instead of WiFi. Almost nobody covers this one properly, which is a shame, because it’s often the better option — see below.
For the broader picture covering extenders in general — placement tips, band selection, mesh vs. standalone — see our full Netgear WiFi Extender Setup Guide.
WiFi/Browser Setup (Standard Method, No WPS Needed)
- Plug the EX3700 into an outlet within sight of your router — not its final location yet. Wait about 60-90 seconds for the Power LED to turn solid green or amber.
- On your phone or laptop, open WiFi settings and connect to the network named NETGEAR_EXT (or, on some units, two separate networks: NETGEAR_EXT_2GEXT and NETGEAR_EXT_5GEXT, one per band — either works for setup).
- Open a browser and go to mywifiext.net, or type the extender’s setup address directly: 192.168.1.250. A correction worth making plainly: several pages online print this as “92.168.1.250” — missing the leading 1. That address doesn’t exist and will just time out in your browser. The correct address is 192.168.1.250, full stop.
- Click New Extender Setup, create an admin username and password, then select your home router’s network and enter its WiFi password when prompted. This is also how you pair the extender to your router if you don’t have (or don’t want to use) a WPS button.
- Once setup finishes, unplug the extender and move it roughly halfway between your router and the weak-signal area. If you can still see at least one bar of your router’s own signal at the new spot, you’ve placed it well.
WPS Setup (No Password Typing)
- Plug in the EX3700 and wait for the Power LED to turn solid.
- Press the WPS button on the extender (usually on the side), then within about two minutes, press the WPS button on your router too — this is how the extender pairs to your router without typing a password.
- Watch the Router/Device Link LED — once it turns solid green, the connection succeeded and setup is complete. No further steps needed.
If the link light doesn’t turn solid within a couple of minutes, don’t keep re-pressing both buttons repeatedly — see “WPS Connects But Nothing Happens” under Troubleshooting below, since in most real cases the cause isn’t a mistimed button press.
Setup Using the Nighthawk App
- Install the Nighthawk app (iOS or Android) and plug in the EX3700.
- Connect your phone to the NETGEAR_EXT network as in the browser method above.
- Open the app — it detects the extender automatically and walks you through selecting your home network, entering its password, and naming the extended network.
- The app will also suggest a final placement location based on signal strength as you move the extender, which the browser and WPS methods don’t offer. In my experience this is the method that trips up the fewest first-time users, since it removes the guesswork around placement entirely.
Setting Up the EX3700 as an Access Point (Wired Method)
This is the one setup method almost no guide covers properly for this model — most either skip it outright or point to a confusing forum thread. If you can run an Ethernet cable from your router to wherever the extender will sit, access point (AP) mode is genuinely the better option: no WiFi signal to repeat means no weak spot, and you get a full-strength wired connection the whole way.
- Connect the EX3700 to your router with an Ethernet cable (port to port) before powering it on, if possible — some units detect AP mode automatically this way.
- Power it on and connect to NETGEAR_EXT as usual, then open 192.168.1.250 in a browser.
- During setup, look for an option labeled Access Point Mode or AP Mode (on the extender’s web interface, usually under Settings or an initial setup prompt) and select it instead of the default WiFi-extension method.
- Finish naming the network as prompted. Because it’s wired back to your router, the extender now simply rebroadcasts your router’s own signal at full strength from its new location, instead of relaying a weaker, re-transmitted WiFi signal.
When to choose this over standard WiFi extension: anywhere you already have (or can easily run) an Ethernet line — a basement, a garage, a detached room — AP mode will consistently outperform wireless extension, because it isn’t competing for airtime with your router’s WiFi at all. It’s the setup I recommend first whenever a customer mentions they already have a cable run to the dead zone, and most never realize it was an option.
Netgear EX3700 LED / Light Meanings (Full Reference)
| LED | Off | Solid Green | Solid Amber | Blinking Amber | Solid Red |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Power | No power reaching the unit | Powered on and ready | Starting up (normal for ~60-90 sec) | Firmware updating — don’t unplug | Device fault — try a factory reset |
| Router/Device Link | Not connected to your router | Excellent connection — well placed | Working but weak connection — move closer to the router | Attempting to connect (mid-setup or reconnecting) | Connection failed |
| WPS | Idle (normal outside active pairing) | — | — | Actively pairing (WPS in progress) | — |
A solid red Power light that doesn’t clear after a few minutes, combined with a 10-15 second factory reset (below), is the point where it’s worth treating the unit as genuinely faulty rather than continuing to retry setup.
Netgear EX3700 Default IP Address and Login
- Setup address: 192.168.1.250 (or mywifiext.net)
- Default admin login: username
admin, passwordpassword(unless you changed it during setup)
As noted above, double-check this against what you type — a missing digit (92.168.1.250) is a surprisingly common typo across setup pages and videos, and it will simply fail to load rather than give you a clear error.
If you’ve changed the admin password and forgotten it, a factory reset (below) restores both the network and login to these defaults — you’ll need to redo setup afterward.
How to Factory Reset the EX3700
Locate the small recessed Reset button on the side of the unit. Using a paperclip or similar tool, press and hold it for 10-15 seconds, until the Power LED flashes. Release, and give the unit about a minute to fully restart with factory defaults restored — including the default NETGEAR_EXT network name and admin login above.
Reset the EX3700 if: you’re locked out of the admin login, the unit was previously configured by someone else, or you’ve worked through the scenarios below without success.
Netgear EX3700 Not Connecting? Real Causes, Not Generic Advice
Only one WiFi band is extending, not both. If you selected both 2.4GHz and 5GHz during setup but only one shows up afterward, the extender has typically bonded them into a single smart-connect network by design — your devices are still covered on both bands, they’re just not listed separately. This is expected behavior, not a dropped connection.
Connected to NETGEAR_EXT, but no internet. This almost always means setup didn’t fully complete — the extender is broadcasting its own setup network but hasn’t yet linked back to your router. Finish the setup steps above rather than troubleshooting internet access on a network that isn’t actually configured yet.
WPS connects but nothing happens. The most common real cause isn’t mistimed button-pressing — it’s that the router and extender ended up with mismatched security settings (for example, a router using WPA3-only). If the Router/Device Link light never turns solid after two genuine WPS attempts, use the browser or app method instead rather than repeating WPS further.
NETGEAR_EXT isn’t showing up at all. Confirm the Power LED is solid (not still booting), that the extender is close to the router for this first-time setup, and that you’re not looking at a unit that’s already been configured previously — a configured EX3700 won’t broadcast NETGEAR_EXT again unless it’s been reset.
If none of these match what you’re seeing after a proper factory reset, our Netgear Extender Not Working guide covers deeper troubleshooting across all extender models, not just setup-stage issues.

FAQ–
What is the default IP address for the Netgear EX3700? 192.168.1.250, or mywifiext.net in a browser. A frequent typo circulating online drops the leading digit (“92.168.1.250”) — that address doesn’t exist and will simply fail to load.
How do I reset my Netgear EX3700? Press and hold the recessed reset button on the side for 10-15 seconds until the Power LED flashes. This restores the default network name and admin login, and you’ll need to redo setup afterward.
How do I connect my Netgear EX3700 to my router? Connect to the NETGEAR_EXT WiFi network it broadcasts, then either press WPS on both devices, or open 192.168.1.250 in a browser and select your router’s network and password during setup.
Can I set up the EX3700 without a WPS button? Yes — the browser/WiFi method above doesn’t require WPS at all. Connect to NETGEAR_EXT, open 192.168.1.250, and complete setup through the on-screen prompts instead.
How do I pair my EX3700 to my router using WPS? Press the WPS button on the extender, then press the WPS button on your router within about two minutes. The Router/Device Link LED turns solid green once pairing succeeds.
How do I set up my EX3700 as an access point instead of a WiFi extender? Connect it to your router with an Ethernet cable, then select Access Point Mode during setup instead of the default wireless-extension option. This gives a full-strength wired connection instead of a repeated WiFi signal, and is the better choice anywhere you can run a cable.
Why does my EX3700 only show one WiFi network instead of two bands? If you enabled both 2.4GHz and 5GHz during setup, many configurations combine them into a single smart-connect network by design — both bands are still active, they’re just not listed as two separate networks.
Why is my EX3700 connected but showing no internet? This almost always means setup hasn’t fully completed yet — the extender is broadcasting its own temporary network but isn’t linked to your router. Finish the setup steps rather than troubleshooting a network that isn’t configured yet.
How do I log into my Netgear EX3700 after setup? Connect to the extended network, then open 192.168.1.250 or mywifiext.net and sign in with the admin username and password you set during setup (default is admin / password if unchanged).
Does the EX3700 work with any router, or only Netgear routers? Any router — it connects over standard WiFi or Ethernet, so it doesn’t require Netgear-specific hardware on the router side.
